Today I was introduced to a young woman named Monica. Monica married at a very young age, in a traditional Ugandan wedding. Her husband often drank and began to mistreat her; at times she was beaten so badly she had to run away and hide. She was often not provided with food and clothing. Monica had three children with her husband; sadly two of the children died. When Monica's father realized how she was being mistreated he was allowed to take Monica back and provide for her himself because the husband had never paid a dowry. Monica has now been living a single life with her one daughter, being provided for by her father and mother for about 12 years. She has been faithful in the church in Gulu. She is able to contribute a small earning for her family by making porridge for school children every day. She works about 4 hours a day, making 30,000 Ugandan Schillings - about $12 per month. As Monica's parents are beginning to age, she realizes she needs to provide for herself and her family. She has wanted to go to tayloring school. Hal found out about her story and, because of the generosity of so many of you, he was easily able to provide the financial help she needed. Monica will be able to go to tayloring school for one month, which includes receiving a sewing machine upon the completion of her training for 6,008 Uganda Schillings - about $250. As you read this, Hal is most likely preparing to speak at a youth conference there in Gulu (3:00 Wednesday afternoon his time, 4:00 a.m. Wednesday morning our time). So, please take a few minutes to pray for Hal. His desire is to communicate to these students how much God loves them, pursues them, and desires a relationship with them; God can satisfy their desires more than any other relationship. If you know Hal, this is not where he feels most comfortable! But then, that is the best place to be - when we are weak, His strength comes through!
